'Joi' is part of an ongoing series of portraits of film characters and is based on a film still from Blade Runner 2049.
In the film, 'Joi' is the virtual love interest of the main protagonist K. She's a holographic projection and requires a projecting device to manifest to the viewer. Like the original film and the novel it was based on, Blade Runner 2049 examines the nature of sentience and what it means to be alive. While the replicants are on the verge of being human, Joi is simply software, yet she raises questions about reality in the audience's mind. Within the context of an already fictional world, she's as real as anyone else in the film and for me, her love for K is believable.
